Buckets or Bags: Can MushBucketsPro Handle Both?

When I first developed MushBucketsPro, the goal was simple: create an easy, accessible way to track every stage of mushroom production. As my intention was to use buckets on my own farm to avoid the ecological impact of discarding plastic bags, the name made perfect sense. Every bucket got its own unique QR code, and from the moment it was filled with substrate until the final harvest, I could follow its journey in real time.

But here’s the thing—despite the name, Mushbuckets is not a “bucket-only” tool. The same process works perfectly for mushroom cultivation in bags.

Why? Because the app doesn’t care about the container—it cares about the process.
Whether you’re growing in a 5-gallon bucket, a polypropylene bag, or even custom containers, the workflow is exactly the same:

  1. Preparation – Record the substrate, additives, and treatment used.

  2. Inoculation – Track the mushroom species and spawn details.

  3. Incubation – Assign to an incubation room and monitor progress.

  4. Fruiting – Move to the fruiting room and record conditions.

  5. Harvest – Log yields, notes, and any observations.

  6. Reset – Mark containers as clean and ready for the next cycle.

For bags, tracking is just as simple as with buckets. A band is placed around each bag, holding a square label with a QR code. That QR code identifies the band, and in turn, identifies the bag. Scan it with your smartphone camera, and you can instantly check or update its stage in the production cycle—whether it’s one bag or an entire batch moving forward together.

This flexibility means Mushbuckets is just as useful for small-scale hobbyists experimenting in their kitchen as it is for commercial growers producing in large incubation rooms—no matter the container choice.

So if you’ve been holding back because you thought Mushbuckets was “only for buckets,” it’s time to think again. It’s really a container-agnostic mushroom production tracker… it just happens to have a catchy bucket-themed name.
